Dear
...................................................................... ,
Dr / Mr ..........................................

Barium Enema and you will be in the X-Ray Department for about 1
hour.
Your appointment is on ............................. the .................... of
....................................
at ................................. am / pm
Please come to X-Ray , which is located off ****** at
the bottom end of the Hospital site. There is a map on the back of this
sheet showing you the areas for parking.
Vehicle access for disabled
patients is possible via the staff entrance. (Press the button at the
security barrier. See map for entrance and exit points.)
The success of the examination depends upon clearing
the bowel on the day before the
X-Ray. To do this, please follow the attached
instructions.
The examination will not be painful at all, although,
it may be a little uncomfortable. It will involve placing a small, soft,
plastic tube into your bottom and running into your bowel a small amount
of liquid. The fluid is then drained out through the tube and air is put
into the bowel. The barium and air coat the bowel wall and X-Rays are
taken in various positions.
This examination will be performed by a Consultant
Radiologist ( a Doctor specialising in diagnosis using X-Rays ) with the
help of a Radiographer and possibly a Nurse. This will all take about 15
minutes. You will then be asked to go to the toilet and afterwards one
further film will be taken.
After the examination, eat and drink as you would do
normally, but a high fibre diet may be needed for a few days to ensure all
the barium is passed and you do not become constipated.
The results will be sent to the Consultant / Doctor who
requested your X-Ray. If you have not already got an appointment you will
be sent one.
