BARIUM MEAL AND FOLLOW-THROUGH
Department name address, number
Dear
................................................................. ,
Dr
/ Mr .......................................................... has
asked us to perform an X-Ray investigation of your stomach and bowel.
Your
appointment is for
...................................................... at
............................. am.
You
must take the enclosed laxative tablets on
................................... night and have
NOTHING to eat or drink after MIDNIGHT on ...................................................
You
will be in the X-Ray department for 2 to 3 hours.
Please
come to X-Ray , which is located off *****, at the bottom end of the
hospital site. There is a map enclosed showing the department and the
areas for parking. Vehicle access
for disabled patients is possible via the staff entrance. (Press the
button at the security barrier. See map for entrance and exit points.)
The
examination is not at all painful. You will be required to swallow a
little powder
and
water which will produce some gas in the stomach. You will then be asked
to drink another liquid called barium. The progress of this barium
liquid will be watched on a
television
monitor and X-Ray films will be taken at various intervals. The
examination will be performed by a Consultant Radiologist ( a doctor
specialising in diagnosis using X-Rays ), with the help of a
Radiographer and possibly a Nurse. You may be asked to drink a small can
of the barium liquid depending on the area to be visualised, followed by
X-Ray
films being taken at half-hour or one hour intervals. It may be a good
idea to bring some suitable reading material in order to pass the time.
We also request that you bring a
sandwich
of your preference as a light snack may help to speed up the
examination.
The
Radiologist MAY give you an injection at the beginning of the
examination. This will help to reduce any discomfort you may feel.
If
you suffer from Glaucoma,
please inform the staff before the examination commences.
