Anatomy Demonstrated
In the lateral position there is superimposition of the
major structures, mandible, orbits, maxilla and zygoma.

Basic Patient Position
Dentures and oral jewellery should be removed.
The patient sits erect facing the erect film, the head is
then turned so that the side of the face is in contact with the
bucky, median saggital plane parallel to the film and interpupillary
line parallel to the floor. This position requires the patient
to sit upright as close as possible to the bucky.

Radiation protection
Direct lead rubber thyroid protection advisable.

Central Ray
The horizontal central ray is centered to a point midway between
the outer canthus of the eye and the external auditory meatus.

Evaluation of the Image
ID and anatomical markers must be present and correct in the
appropriate area of the film.
Optimal exposure should penetrate all the bone structures and
contrast should be low enough to visualise fully the bone and
soft tissue structures.
The limits of the exam8ination should include the frontal bone
superiorly the mandible anteriorly and inferiorly and
posteriorly the EAM.
The symmetrical facial structures should be superimposed,
rotation will cause the mandibular rami to be projected one in
front of the other, tilt will cause the orbital roofs to be
projected one higher than the other, in each case the structure
furthest from the film will be magnified more.
